Ovasitol: A Natural Way to Improve Fertility and Weight Loss?

Learn the benefits of Ovasitol for pregnancy, weight loss, and hormone health.

Whether you have polycystic ovary syndrome or some other hormonal imbalance, you've probably heard about Ovasitol.

Ovasitol is a dietary supplement marketed primarily for its potential benefits to treat PCOS, irregular periods, and infertility. It's made of two types of inositol: Myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol.

Inositol is an essential nutrient that helps to regulate hormones, including insulin, and can be found naturally in a variety of foods, like foods like citrus fruits and fiber-rich food. It's credited with improving PCOS symptoms and other hormone imbalances. Myo-inositol is the most abundant form of inositol in the body, and it helps the cells use glucose properly. D-chiro-inositol helps to balance the hormone levels in women with PCOS.

Globally, the inositol market is worth US$246 million and growing fast. And Ovasitol is one of the most well-known supplements in that market. According to Ovasitol manufacturer Theralogix, Ovasitol is “the first and only inositol supplement that is independently verified for content accuracy and purity” through a third-party body, NSF international.

Below, we'll review Ovasitol benefits for PCOS, pregnancy, weight loss, and more. We look at research and hear from experts.

What does Ovasitol do to your body?

The forms of inositol in Ovasitol, myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol, have several benefits for hormone health.

According to Theralogix, Ovasitol uses a combination of myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol that supports healthy hormone levels:

“Ovasitol contains 100% pure inositol powder, a combination of myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol, in the body's naturally occurring ratio of 40 to 1. Recent studies have shown that taking a combination of these two forms, in this ratio, is more beneficial than taking myo-inositol or D-chiro inositol alone.”

Overall, there is some evidence that an inositol supplement like Ovasitol can help promote better hormone balance and support weight loss. For example, a study published in the International Journal of Endocrinology supports the claim that this type of combined therapy has positive effects on hormone health. More specifically, research shows myo-inositol can help metabolic health, while D-chiro-inositol reduces excess androgens (male hormones).

What's more, Ovasitol claims to provide relief from PCOS symptoms such as irregular periods and infertility. It's believed to work by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing insulin resistance. Elevated insulin levels are a key factor in PCOS. But even women without PCOS can have insulin resistance and other hormone imbalance, like excess testosterone.

In addition, it may support regular menstrual cycles and better ovarian function.  Because it lowers testosterone, it may also help reduce symptoms such as hirsutism (excessive hair growth), acne, and weight gain.

Ovasitol and PCOS: Is Ovasitol good for PCOS?

Up to 70% of women with PCOS have insulin resistance and excess male androgens. Research has shown that the combination of inositol used in Ovasitol is the most effective in treating these PCOS symptoms.

One study of 46 PCOS patients found myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol lowers testosterone and insulin levels. Additional research published in the Gynecological Endocrinology journal, showed myo-inositol (MI) and D-chiro-inositol (DCI) are considered “efficient and safe alternatives in PCOS management” because both manage the effects of insulin resistance.

“...whereas DCI contributes in mediating insulin activity mainly on non-ovarian tissues, MI displays specific effects on ovary, chiefly by modulating glucose metabolism and FSH-signaling. Moreover, MI may also improve ovarian functions by modulating steroid metabolism through non-insulin-dependent pathways.”

And some healthcare providers say their PCOS patients have found success with inositol supplements like Ovasitol.

Dr. Ana Kausel, an endocrinologist, tells NYMag, Ovasitol works to treat PCOS specifically because it has the right 40:1 ratio of myo-inositol to D-chiro-inositol.

In the same article, Angela Grassi, of PCOS Nutrition Center, said: “I would say 90 percent of my patients get their menstrual cycle regulated within three months.”

Grassi added that Ovasitol also helped her reduce her AIC levels, average blood glucose levels for three months. If you have insulin resistance, these can be higher. Grassi explains how Ovasitol stacks up against Metformin, a prescription medication to control blood sugar levels.

“When I was diagnosed with PCOS, my A1C was around 5.6.

“When you get over 5.7, that’s considered a pre-diabetes range. When I took Metformin, which is a common [prescription] medication used in the PCOS population to produce glucose and insulin, it only reduced my A1C to 5.4. I started researching inositol to see if it’s really as good as it sounds, and I tried it for myself, and three months later, my A1C went down to 5.1 and then three months after that, it went down to 4.9.”

One study, published in the 2021 Reproductive Health journal suggests that myo-inositol and d-chiro inositol are more effective in treating PCOS than a combination of metformin and thiazolidinediones, another insulin sensitising medication.

I started supplementing with inositol after a doctor helped me make the connection between my PCOS and acne breakouts.  At the time, I knew I had PCOS but had no idea how much it was messing with my hormone levels. I'd visited multiple healthcare providers, taken birth control pills, and spent a fortune on skincare products. But nothing worked.

I'd never heard of inositol before and was eager to give anything a try. After one month of taking inositol, my acne cleared up significantly. Not only did it help with my acne but it also helped regulate my hormones and gave me more energy. For the first time in my life, I had regular menstrual cycles.

I'm so grateful for the doctor who took the time to explain the connection between PCOS and my skin problems. Sounds dramatic, but she changed my life by giving me the knowledge I needed to take charge of my own health.

In addition to using inositol, I started eating a low-carb diet and restricting processed foods. I exercised regularly and prioritised sleep.

While I'll recommend inositol for anyone dealing with PCOS-related issues, I know my results came from diet and exercise too.

Reading through Ovasitol reviews on WebMD, some women with PCOS report positive experiences: regular periods and clearer skin. You’ll even see a couple of Ovasitol pregnancy successes, like this one:

"I am 35 and have lived with PCOS since my teenage years. I have never menstruated naturally, only ever when on birth control. I had been on metformin for years which had not done anything for but wreak havoc on my digestive system…doctor would just push up my dose more and more. I finally decided to see a fertility doctor to start on what would be a long journey given my years of infertility.

"The practice I went to gifted me some samples of this supplement…and I thought “with, can’t be worse than metformin”. 7 days later I had a full period like I hadn’t had since my teenage years. Since I didn’t know the length of my cycle, was heartbroken when I didn’t get my period after 40 days, but had been experiencing some pms type symptoms…I discovered a few days later I was pregnant."

On the other hand, some reviewers have experienced little or no difference in their symptoms. It makes sense that women report such different experiences with Ovasitol.  We all react differently to supplements and medications. For some women, it might take a few months before they notice a difference in their symptoms, while for others it could be instant.

It's important to remember that Ovasitol, or any other supplement, is not a magic pill. It takes time and consistency to see results, and usually, you'll get the best results when you make other lifestyle changes too.

If you don’t have PCOS, but suspect you’re suffering from a hormone imbalance, supplementing with inositol may still be beneficial. Research shows inositol may restore ovulation, reducing testoterone and increasing progesterone levels in women without polycystic ovary syndrome. It's important to talk to your doctor if you're experiencing any symptoms of a hormone imbalance.

Ovasitol and pregnancy: Does Ovasitol help you get pregnant?

Some studies suggest that taking a combination of the forms of inositol found in Ovasitol may improve fertility because it regulates menstrual cycles, restores ovulation, and improves egg quality.

According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, one of the main reasons for female infertility is problems with ovulation and the menstrual cycle.

As we've learned, many women who suffer from PCOS also have insulin resistance. Insulin resistance can cause the ovaries to produce too much testosterone. High levels of androgens can interfere with ovulation.

Research shows that combined therapy of myo-inositol and d chiro-inositol can restore ovulation. In a study of 56 PCOS patients, researchers tested the different ratios of myo-inositol and d chiro inositol. The women took the inositol every day for three months.

 Researchers concluded:

“We found that the 40:1 MI/DCI ratio is the best for PCOS therapy aimed at restoring ovulation and normalizing important parameters in these patients.”

Other research found a combined therapy of myo-inositol and D chiro-inositol is associated with better egg quality, according to researchers.

Finally, one animal study published in the Journal of Cellular Physiology found mice with PCOS who were treated with the 40:1 formula saw improvements in ovarian function and “faster recovery of their fertility”.

While these results are promising, it’s important to remember Ovasitol, or any supplement really, can't guarantee a pregnancy. Reach out to your doctor to improve your chances of getting pregnant.

Ovasitol and hormones: Does Ovasitol help hormonal imbalance?

Research suggests that inositol may help improve insulin sensitivity, which is important for regulating blood sugar levels and can be a factor in hormonal imbalances.

Studies show inositol supplementation, like with Ovasitol, can reduce androgens and regulate insulin. This may provide relief from PCOS symptoms like excess hair growth, irregular periods, and acne.

One study, published in the European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences, showed inositol supplementation  increased progesterone levels and led to regular periods.

Ovasitol and weight loss: Can Ovasitol make you lose weight?

Ovasitol can help promote weight loss by improving insulin resistance and hormone health.

As we’ve seen, inositol supplementation can improve metabolic health, which may contribute to weight loss. It can help reduce insulin resistance and inflammation, which are associated with obesity.

Studies have shown that inositol supplementation can lead to reductions in body mass index and improved metabolic health. Additionally, inositol can help balance hormones, such as insulin and testosterone. These hormones are known to play a role in weight regulation, so keeping them balanced helps promote healthy weight loss.

Finally, Ovasitol may also help increase energy levels, which can make it easier to stick to an exercise program – another key factor when it comes to successful weight loss.

Though, if you're looking to lose weight, the most effective approach is likely to be a combination of healthy eating habits, regular exercise, and lifestyle changes that promote overall health.

Ovasitol side effects

According to Ovasitol manufacturer Theralogix,  the supplement is generally well-tolerated when taken at 4 000 mg per day.

However, some Ovasitol reviewers on Amazon have experienced bloating and headaches when they first start the supplement. Worth noting that these side-effects do appear to be rare.

Ovasitol is also said to be safe for pregnant women. I took a prenatal vitamin containing inositol when I was pregnant, but run it by your doctor first.

Plus, if you have PCOS talk to your healthcare provider before taking Ovasitol as it could interfere with other medications.

Ovasitol to restore hormone balance

There are many potential benefits of Ovasitol. Some people report regular menstrual cycles and better energy levels.

Still, it's always best to consult a medical professional before beginning any new supplement regimen. Being an expert in your own health is key. But with the right information and guidance, you can make smart choices for your body.
